Does modern technology make life more convenient, or was life better when technology was simpler?
In modern society, to some extent, technology has dominated our lives in many aspects. Therefore, modern technology has contributed to convenience, comfort as well as swiftness. However, it is suggested that life was better when technology was simpler. But I would argue that whilst the benefits of both modern and simpler technology are enormous for the well-being, the downsides could not be overlooked.
It can be argued that modern technology has exerted positive influence on the daily lives of the public. Indeed, modern transport system has facilitated the travel domestically and internationally. In addition, it is widely admitted that modern-day communication method has given rise to globalization in terms of economy and trade. In other words, the living standard of the people from all over the world could, more or less, be improved.
Yet people’s lives could be negatively affected by the modern technology. In fact, more often than not, the privacy of the individual or some companies could potentially be invaded by means of hi-tech computer tools.
Therefore, there is an opinion that when technology was simpler, life was supposed to be better than present. Indeed, people did not suffer from the pressure from work and competition so that they were free from the psychological stress. Moreover, in the past, lives were not influenced by the disastrous consequence of modern technology such as global warming, nuclear leakage and computer virus, to name but a few. In this case, it could be considered that better life in the past was a relative concept. And I would argue that if the technology was not that advanced, the real better life could not be achieved.
Given the above arguments, it is reasonable to assume that although modern technology could contribute to the convenience of life, the disadvantage should not be ignored as well. The true well-being would not exist without modern technology.
